9Q-CTI Over the DRC - probably on
the way to Mbuji Mayi from Lubumbashi early one morning. The
aircraft was used extensively by Tabazaire until the plantations
were taken over by Rothmans. The Carvair, although proven reliable
and robust, was retired after it was seen that it was uneconomical
to transport tobacco in this way and the Kanyama farm was closed.
The Carvair was eventually and sadly broken up at Kinshasa.

Carvair, 9Q-CTI, (undated but
mid 1990s) at Kanyama Airstrip loading a cargo of tobacco leaf bales
for Lubumbashi. The number 3 engine was running all the time
following a three-engine departure from Mbuji Mayi and an air-start.
It would not start on the ground at Mbuji Mayi and we couldn't get
airborne out of Kanyama with a load of tobacco and three engines if
we shut it down again!! (John Miller 30 december
